July 2021 Reading Wrap Up

We’re back with another wrap up! Yes, we’re once again going to ignore our sporadic blogging habits and lack of blog hopping! Instead we shall distract you by talking about the books we read and purchased this month!

Books Read:

Malka:

July was the first full month of my internship and I think you can tell just how much of my energy it took based on how much I read this month. Because I only read two books. Yes, you read that right. Two! I really just didn’t have the time and/or brain power to read most days, and that’s okay. This internship is only a few short weeks, so I’m trying to take advantage of my time here. I can always catch up on my reading some other month! Plus, I really enjoyed the two books I read this month! So at least there’s that!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This was such a solid romance! It made me laugh a ton, and I was shipping the two of them so hard the entire book! If you just need something to make you happy, this is the feel good book you need in your life!

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I’m currently writing my review for this one, since I read it as an e-ARC, but let me just say this! If you read Spoiler Alert and were excited to read Alex and Lauren’s story, you will not be disappointed! And even for those of you that haven’t read Spoiler Alert, I’d definitely add this to your TBR if you’re a romance fan!

Chana:

11 books later and I’m even further behind on my reading challenge than usual. How.

The whole Ancillary series, 10/10! Hail Mary was good but the ending was kind of meh, so probably more of a 4.5 star rating? And Haunting of Hill House was incredible, I now need to read as much of Shirley Jackson’s works as a possibly can.

Books Acquired:

Malka:

All of the books I acquired this month were ones I purchased for myself. Yes, that’s right. I purchased 11 books, and then proceeded to read NONE of them in July. Oh well! I decided to break the books up into the groups that I purchased them in, since there isn’t really any better was to split them up.

Purchased:

These first three were purchased through Bookshop.org, and were each picked out because I wanted some more cuteness in my life. So I figured two romances and a manga could do the trick! (I actually have already read one of these and plan on reading at least on other in August, but you’ll have to wait for next month’s wrap up to see which books I’m referring to. Or you can check out my Goodreads, if you’re really that impatient.)

This next batch was also purchased through Bookshop.org and the books consist of anticipated releases. I was very excited for Chunky and Jukebox, since I adore graphic novels, and I had an e-book copy of Sweethand, but decided that I’d prefer to get a physical copy instead. So I did!

Then I visited a Barnes & Noble one day, and obviously I couldn’t leave without purchasing a book, or two, or three. I’ve heard amazing things about Anxious People, and Chana convinced me that I should buy it when I saw it. I was actually hoping to find a copy of Long Distance, since I really like Whitney Gardner’s work. And while I was trying to find Long Distance, I stumbled upon Paranorthern and the Chaos Bunny A-Hop-Calypse and with a title and cover like that, how could I not purchase it?

Lastly, I finally visited this cute indie bookstore near my internship and it was absolutely adorable! I spent so much time browsing and just taking in the cute knick knacks they were selling. And since I like supporting small businesses, I was ethically obligated to purchase some more books. I picked up The Anthropocene Reviewed, since I’ve listened to a few podcast episodes and thought the premise was super cute. I’m thinking of picking a month where I read one or two reviews a night. And then I asked the employees working there for a recommendation, and they suggested Queen of Babble as a fun, cute romance, so I’m excited to give it a try!

Chana:

I can’t really remember the books I acquired this month?? But I’ll try my best.

I’m happy with all of these purchases except for Any Way the Wind Blows. That I bought in a moment of weakness (the weakness being, huh, I probably won’t like this but I own the other two and this will look pretty in my shelf). Ah well, hopefully I will learn from my mistakes.

Things We Did:

Malka:

I interned some more! I’m working in a mechanical engineering lab on a novel biomedical device and it has been so much fun! I’ve gotten to use so many cool toys, *cough * I mean, tools, and have learned so many interesting new things. One of my current favorite tasks is coming up with designs that I get to 3D print or laser cut, which help to improve the device I’m working on! I finish up the internship right before school starts again, meaning that in a few months I will no longer have anything fun to talk about, so for now enjoy these pictures of my designs for a box that I ended up assembling from pieces of acrylic that I laser cut and then glued together!

Chana:

In terms of actual things, nothing! In terms of media like things, almost nothing? I watched The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor (hence Haunting of Hill House and Turn of the Screw on my read books this month). I highly recommend THoHH! It was incredible! Very different from the book as I later found out, but still an incredible adaptation.

The Haunting of Hill House (TV Mini Series 2018) - IMDb

I also started playing Skyward Sword on the switch. It’s very different from BoTW (which makes sense since it came out 7 years before it), but I’m really enjoying it so far!

How was your reading this month? How many books did you acquire in July? What was the best book you read this month? Have you read any of the books that we did?

    1. Project Hail Mary was so good!! I actually liked Psalm for the Wild Built! It was so cute and a really enjoyable read, very much leaning in the higher three stars for me 🙂

  1. I loved Beach Read, so I’m really looking forward to People We Meet on Vacation! It’s good to know it seems to be a worthwhile read 🤗 And I adored Project Hail Mary!
Also, wow, Malka, those projects look way more sophisticated than anything I could ever do! Though I agree with Chana that watching series also isn’t a bad alternative 😁

    1. I actually haven’t read Beach Read! I’ve heard really good things, but for some reason the premise doesn’t capture my interest! But People We Meet On Vacation was perfect for what I needed when I read it. I laughed out loud and I shipped the two of them so hard which is all I ever want in a romance!

Awwww, thanks! I mean, I summarized a few weeks of learning and trial and error into three pictures, so it looks a lot more impressive and difficult than it actually was! I bet you could do it too if you had the same resources and support that I did! (But I will admit that part of me wanted to show off and look sophisticated, so I included those pictures 😜)

      1. Well, after the amount of work you put in, I think you deserve to show off a little 😉 It does look very sophisticated!

And I’m really craving a cute summery romance, so People We Meet On Vacation sounds perfect!

  2. I’ve already been excited for All the Feels… but I’m even more excited now. 👀 Can’t wait for your review, Malka. Hope you’ll love Twice Shy (I found it super-enjoyable) and Anxious People, which is one of my all time favorite books. 😀 Sweethand is one I’m excited to read too.

I’m kind of sad to see that If This Gets Out only received three stars from you, Chana – I’ll need to lower my expectations for that one maybe. I love Hill House and Bly Manor (and enjoyed the books too, though not as much) so I’m glad you watched them. 😀

Hope you’re both having an excellent August! 🙂

    1. If This Gets Out was cute! I think one of the reasons I rated it lower was because I was mainly reading SFF at the time and the genre change really got to me 😅

Ugggh, The Haunting series is SO GOOD!! Midnight Mass comes out at the end of the month and I can’t wait for another spooky Netflix show!

  3. People We Meet on Vacation and All the Feels are both on my wish list. I’m excited to read these too and am happy you enjoyed them. 3D printers are so cool! My husband’s friend has one and printed out nose supports for our masks, which I use everyday to keep my mask in place on my face and not inch up to my eyes. Hope you both had a great August!

    1. Both books were so good! I hope you get a chance to read them both before the year is over!

And 3D printers are super cool! I love seeing how many creative and imaginative items people print when I go to use the printers! I love how you can make something for display or something for a purpose with the same exact machine! It’s so versatile!

Thank you! I hope you did as well! 💕
