May 2021 Reading Wrap Up

IT’S JUNE!!! This is exciting for many many reasons!

  1. We finished our Spring semesters!
  2. pride month
  3. The weather is actually nice now??

Those are our top three “why we’re excited for June” reasons, but another one is that we’ll hopefully be able to read more this month! Not that our May reading was too shabby, as you’re about to see!

Books Read:

Malka:

I somehow managed to read 10 books this month!?!?! I’m honestly not sure exactly how. Finals still happened, and I was quite busy with them, but I guess I managed to make time for reading after all! Seven out of the ten books I read were ones that I already owned, which is fantastic, because my TBR has been growing steadily without much reading happening, so I’m happy that I’m on my way to making my physical TBR a more reasonable size!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I finally read Soft Magic after buying it a few months back and I absolutely LOVED this poetry collection! I’m trying to read more of the books I own before buying new ones, but I’ll definitely be getting more of Upile Chisala’s poetry in the coming months!

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I love how all four of my 4 star reads were romances. (Although technically one was a 3.5 and one was a 3.75, but both were good enough that I rounded up). I’ll give some brief thoughts on each of these, but I’ll be reviewing two of them, so you can always find out more details that way! Hana Khan Carries On was a really cute You’ve Got Mail retelling. I really enjoyed it, but I still prefer Ayesha at Last! I also finally got around to reading The Ex Talk! I thought it was pretty good, but I didn’t realize how much the lying aspect would bother me. That’s just a personal issue though. Hang the Moon is one I don’t have much to say about, but I will probably do a mini review for it later in the month. And lastly, we have a sneak peek into my NetGalley acceptances this month, since I got approved for The Heart Principle. I’m in middle of writing my review for this one, but my overall thoughts are that it was superbly done, just a lot heavier than I expected.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

My three star reads were all good, just not amazing. The one that stood out to me the most was definitely By Any Means necessary. I have complicated feelings about that book. Some things happened that I wasn’t expected but that definitely made me think!

Rating: 2 out of 5.

I have a whole review on this book and why it ended up with a two star rating after I was so excited for it, so instead of rambling, if you’re interested, I’d recommend you read all my thoughts in that post!

Chana:

Unsurprisingly, this has become the month where I am behind on my reading challenge! This whole month has been a hell of assignments and finals so I’m happy with the 11 books that I managed to read.

Now that finals are over I plan on writing a whole post dedicated to this masterpiece of a series, because oh my goodness, IT IS GOOD!! As a concluding book to a series The Dragon of Jin Sayeng is one of the best concluding books I have ever read. No exaggeration. The character development is phenomenal, the plot take you place you wouldn’t have even dreamed of going to, 11/10 a must read.

Ya’ll may have noticed that I have been primarily reading adult fantasy nowadays. I feel kind of bad because there are so many YA books I want to read that I’ve sort of pushed off to the side, but on the other hand, I like fantasy books. They are good. So I will probably continue to primarily read them.

Books Acquired:

Malka:

This was a great month for me in terms of the books I acquired! I got some books I can’t wait to read in physical form, some of my most anticipated reads in e-ARC form, and there even was the appearance of a physical ARC, which is quite rare for me!

Purchased:

I purchased 5 books this month! You’ve already seen that I read Hang the Moon, and I’m hoping to read the other 4 over the summer! People We Meet on Vacation and The Guncle were pre-orders, but I got the two graphic novels, Just Pretend and The Girl From the Sea in person when I visited Barnes & Noble with my friend!

NetGalley:

THIS IS NOT A DRILL EVERYONE! I GOT SUCH ACCEPTED FOR SUCH EXCITING READS THIS MONTH!

First, you’ve already seen that I read The Heart Principle immediately after receiving it. I cannot even express how excited I was when I saw that I had been approved for the e-ARC! It was right after I finished a final, after being offline for a few hours, and it was exactly what I needed to re-energize me before taking my last final of the semester.

Then I got approved for the companion to Spoiler Alert. I was SO excited for Alex and Lauren’s story that I had been checking daily for All the Feels to go up on NetGalley, and you’d better believe I requested it the second I saw it available!

As for The Lady Gets Lucky, I am kinda obsessed with the cover? They just look so snuggly! Plus, this features the lessons in seduction trope, which I ADORE! I can’t wait to pick this one up!

Publisher:

This was actually the first physical ARC that I received by sending an email request to the publisher! It’s quite the milestone for me and I’m SUPER excited to read this book in the next few months!

After I finished my last final I went on a book buying adventure (aka to Barnes and Noble) and this was my haul!! I’m really excited about all these books, and I can’t wait to read them.

From the Publisher:

This book has all the exciting key words, outlaw, thief, betrayal, and vengeance!! It comes out at the end of August and I can’t wait to read it!!

Things We Did:

Malka:

I finished the hardest semester in my major! Wooo hoooooooo

I also started the process of catching up on the blog in the past few days, but it’s a long process! But also, if I say hi on one of your older posts, I hope you don’t mind!

Chana:

I graduated from college!! I am now officially a mechanical engineer!

It’s a little bit not exciting due to the whole “graduating from your bedroom after ~a year and a half of having online classes” thing, but all the same, I consider it an accomplishment. I also killed another plant this month! (Her name was Ivy, I may have forgotten to water her after being overtaken by grief from the deaths of my first two plants). Anywho, I’ve decided to not buy plants for the time being. For the sake of the plants. Being a plant mom is not my calling.

Was this a good reading month for you? What’s the most exciting book you acquired? Do you have any plans for your June TBR?

    1. Thank you, May! 💕 I honestly feel like I’m still recovering from this past semester, even though it’s been almost a month!

And the trick to reading 10 books while you have finals is commitment to procrastination! Also magic, since even with the procrastination I still don’t know how I did it!

I hope you’re having a wonderful June as well!

    1. Thank you so much, Marie! 💕 I’m so happy to be so close to getting my degree, but it has been a LOT of work! Your encouragement means a lot!

So far I’ve found that I actually prefer Rachel Lynn Solomon’s YA to her adult books, but I’m still super excited for Weather Girl next year!

I hope you’re having a great month as well!

  5. Congrats to both of you on your academic milestones this month!! That’s so exciting. So many good books too (10 books during finals is insane!) I just finished The Ex Talk and gave it 4 stars too – I flew through it and can definitely see myself rereading in future. Definitely want to read more from the author.

    1. Thank you so much! (I’m honestly still unsure how I managed to read 10 books during finals, but I’m not complaining!)

The Ex Talk was pretty cute, although not my favorite Rachel Lynn Solomon. Because of that I highly recommend reading more of her work! I’ve loved the two YA books of hers that I’ve read, and I can’t wait to read more from her!
