July Reading Wrap Up

It’s finally August! This is exciting because August is the month both of us were born! And who doesn’t love birthdays! (It’s less exciting that we start school at the end of this month, so we’re just gonna keep pretending that’s not happening). For such a long month we really don’t have much to say about it, so we’re just gonna go ahead and start talking about the books we read this month!

Books Read:

Malka:

This month truly was a fantastic reading month! For one thing, I finished a record amount of books. With the way my reading has been going this year, I’m super proud to have finished 11 books in one month! But beyond that, I really enjoyed the books I read. I had no three star reads! My reads were either really, really good, or not good at all!

I think one of my favorite thing about this month, is that I read such a variety of books, but they were each amazing! I mean, I read literary fiction, romance, contemporary, graphic novels, a book in verse, and a sci-fi romance. That’s a lot of different genres, and each of them were so great!

But because they were each so great, I’m having trouble picking out favorites, or ones that I want to highlight. So although all the books are linked to Goodreads, if you’re curious about any particular book, I’d love to chat with you in the comments about my reading this month!

Chana:

This month was so long I genuinely don’t even remember what I read. My goal was to read 15 books, but I fell a little short and ended up reading 14. And, I finally lowered my reading challenge! It hurt too much to keep seeing the large amount of books that I was behind by, so for now I’m aiming for 175, and if I somehow stop having reading slumps I might reach my original goal of 200.

Books Acquired:

Malka:

This month I only purchased 7 books! Since that’s half the amount I acquired last month, I’m going to consider it a win. Plus, in August I plan on reading the all the books I purchased that I didn’t pick up this month! Since only one of the books is a full length novel I don’t think I’ll have too much trouble! (In case you were curious, Helium is a book of poetry, The Witch Boy series are all graphic novels, leaving Felix Ever After as the only novel). I’ve been very in the mood for graphic novels recently, so if you have any favorites, feel free to suggest them to me! The more unknown they are, the better because it means there’s less of a chance that I already have them on my wishlist!

I bought Loveless this month and I’m so happy I did! I really enjoyed it and the cover is super pretty! Ideally, I’d like to collect ALL of Alice Oseman’s books, partly because they look super nice together, and partly because I love her books!

Things We Did:

Malka:

I’m trying to think back on what I did this month, and quite honestly I’m drawing a blank. I obviously read quite a bit, and there was some blogging thrown in the mix, but I have no idea what I spent the rest of my time doing. I didn’t even start any new puzzles! But hopefully next month will be more exciting! (By which I mean I have baking plans and puzzles plans!)

Chana:

I finished my summer school and internship! Now I have about three weeks free before Fall semester starts and I don’t know what I’m going to do with all that time! (Probably sleep if I’m being honest).

Posts We Loved:

Paper Fury had this amazing post about things she wants to see more in terms of disability rep.

Mandy and Sha @ Book Princess Reviews wrote a fun post where they rated the first sentences of books.

Rhi @ Marshmallow Harmonies wrote a fantastic discussion post about book to movie adaptations.

How was your reading this month? What was your favorite book that you read? Do you have any graphic novel recommendations?

  1. The cover of Snapdragon looks so cute! I will check it out for sure!
You both did a lot of reading. I had the weirdest month where I started a whole lot of different books, but this worked to push me out of my slump for a bit so yeey!

    1. Snapdragon is probably one of my favorite graphic novels! I just loved it so very much! I hope you enjoy it too!

I’m so happy with the amount that I read this month! It had been so long since I had such a great reading month, I was starting to think that I’d just remain somewhat slumpy for the rest of the year!

I’m glad that you managed to work yourself out of your slump though! I hope that August ends up being an even better month, with no slumps whatsoever!

    1. I know!! I can’t believe so much of the year has passed already 😭 Ooooh, I hope you like it!! The ending contains so much pain, but it’s amazing!!

  2. August is your birthday month?! That’s cool! I hope that August will be a much better month than before for both of you 💖

My reading for July was good overall. I only managed to finish 4 books but I’m enjoying them. My favourite would be The Boy Who Saw In Colours 😊

Also can’t believe it’s already August. I feel like I’ve done nothing these past few months.

    1. Thank you Aina!! 💕💕

Yayy! I feel like it’s definitely not about the quantity of the books, but the quality, so I’m happy that you enjoyed the books you read!

Loll, at least I’m not the only one who feels like I’ve been getting nothing done 😅 I hope you have a fantastic August!!

  3. I think I’ve mentioned all of these before, Malka, but I’m glad you enjoyed The A.I. Who Loved Me, Boyfriend Material, and You Should See Me in a Crown. I read the latter two last month, and they were so good and made me so happy. 😀

Chana, I’m happy you enjoyed Loveless, I adored that book last month. I’m looking forward to reading The Poppy War and Into the Drowning Deep, so I’m glad to see that you enjoyed these/their sequel. I was SO EXCITED for If We Were Villains, but it proved to be a disappointment for me, as well. 😦 I’m pretty sure I rated it 3 or 4 stars, which shows how sometimes I can let my opinion be influenced by the hype. :/ I think you made the right decision in changing your goal, reading shouldn’t feel stressful.

Hope you’ll both have a wonderful August! 🙂

    1. Loveless was so so good 🥰 Yess, Into the Drowning Deep was FANTASTIC I really hope you enjoy it!! And I can’t wait until you get around to reading The Poppy War 😄

Ugh, I had a bunch of small issues with We Were Villains 😪 I think for me it was a lot easier to give it a lower rating because I only started seeing the hype *after* I finished reading it 😂

I hope you have a great August!! 💕💕

  4. Ah you guys did so well!! I also got to Boyfriend Material last month and it was so good! Can’t wait to get to Black Flamingo, Loveless and You Should See Me In A Crown too. Hope your August goes just as well

    1. Thanks so much! It really was such a great reading month! Boyfriend Material was adorable, and such a good rom-com! Black Flamingo was absolutely fantastic! And You Should See Me In a Crown was great as well! I really hope you love them both when you pick them up!

Thank you! I hope you have a fantastic August as well!

  5. Thanks for including our Rating First Sentences post in your wrap-up!

Malka, your shaming me with all the different genres that you’re read in the past month. I.. haven’t even read a single book? It’s been a busy month for sure, but I still feel the shame, haha. Do you feel a difference in your reading when you test out a lot of different genres vs stick to on or two? I know I’ve always stayed in my own genre lane so I have nothing to compare to.

I’m so jealous that you have a copy of Loveless Chana! I’m waiting for that review~ That is definitely going to be the first book I buy when I finally get back to purchasing books.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Of course! 💕

Oh, no! I didn’t intend to shame anyone! I was just really proud of how diversely I read, since I tend to stick to contemporary and romance, with a graphic novel thrown in there every once in a while! And I’ve definitely had busy months where I barely read (or haven’t read at all) so don’t beat yourself up over the fact that I read 10 books. I’m on vacation and staying home literally doing nothing but blogging and reading. I have the time!

Hmmm, I think I’m more all over the place when I read lots of genres. Because usually that indicates that I’m reading multiple books at once. But that wasn’t quite the case this month, so I’m not really sure what reading multiple genres means in terms of my reading! I think it is nice to have a change from my usual genres though. And I’m hoping that I continue to diversify my genres a bit more while I’m on vacation. I know that once I’m back in school, I’m going to start ignoring all books that aren’t contemporary or romance again!

  6. Happy Birthday month to both of you!! I hope you both have wonderful days 🙂

There’s so many books in your wrap up that I am even more excited to read now! I actually hadn’t heard of Snapdragon before but it looks like something I would be interested in!! I also particularly want to read The Glass Hotel, You Should See Me In A Crown (I’m in the queue at my library!), Into the Drowning Deep and Loveless (I think I mentioned already that I am able to get this from Libby).

These are pretty popular graphic novels, so I’m not sure if there’s much point recommending them, lol, but my favourites are the Paper Girls series and Nimona!

    1. Thanks so much, Sabrina!

I’m so glad to hear that! Snapdragon is probably my favorite graphic novel that I’ve read so far this year! I read it when I was having a bad day, and by the end of it I was smiling from ear to ear! The Glass Hotel is really good! It’s super character driven and atmospheric, but I think you’ll like it if you like Station Eleven. It’s a very similar style even though the topics are completely different. And I can’t wait to hear what you think of You Should See Me In a Crown once you get a copy from your library!

I actually have read both suggestions, but thank you so much for trying! And you were pretty spot on with my graphic novel tastes! Nimona is one of my favorite graphic novels of all times!

  7. Sounds like you both had an awesome reading month!!! I have You Should See Me in a Crown and The Black Flamingo, so hopefully I can read those soon. I really loved Boyfriend Material. I’ve read the first Witch Boy, but not the rest. I do love a great graphic novel though. Let’s see…not as well-known graphic novel recommendations –

    Kiss Number 8
    Bloom
    Archival Quality
All Summer Long by Hope Larsen
    Scarlett Hart: Monster Hunter
    Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol
    Cici’s Journal: The Adventures of a Writer-In-Training

Hopefully some of these will be new-to-you!

    1. It really was a great reading month! Those were both such wonderful books, so I hope you enjoy them. The Black Flamingo was especially fantastic. There’s something about books told in verse that I just adore! And I’m so glad you enjoyed Boyfriend Material! That book was such a fun rom-com! And I’m very excited to read the entire Witch Boy series this month! Graphic novels is probably my favorite genre after romance and contemporary YA!

I’ve read a few of the graphic novels you mentioned, such as Bloom, Kiss Number 8, and Be Prepared, but I’ll have to check the other ones out because I hadn’t heard of them before! Thank you so much for the recommendations!

  8. That’s so great you guys got to read so many books! I haven’t heard of most of these so I will have to check them out! I don’t buy new books very often, usually when I buy books it’s from book sales or Half Price Books.

    1. Yayy, I hope you find some books that you like from here! I love websites like thrift books and book outlet for finding cheap books, they usually have great stuff that isn’t crazy expensive!

      1. I’m sure I will! Book Outlet and thrift books were my lifesaver in college when I had to buy books for my classes. I didn’t have a lot of traditional textbooks thankfully but a lot of non fiction and fiction to read.

  10. I’m glad to see someone else not loving ACOT&R because honestly I’m bombarded with it on booksta 24/7 and I feel like I might explode any second now *deep breath*
The series is just really cringe & I read the whole thing for a laugh because I genuinely do enjoy…making fun of it 😂

    Hope y’all have a good August 💞

    1. It’s everywhere!! You literally cannot escape it 😭😭 I don’t know if I’m going to continue on with the series because I already *know* that I’m not going to enjoy it, but I feel like I might have to, just so that I can be fully able to judge the books 😌

I hope you have a fantastic August too!! 💕

Malka: I’m so happy you read so many different books and had such a fantastic reading month yay! I can’t WAIT to read You Should See Me in a Crown, it sounds amazing.
Chana : you read SO many books as well, wow. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on Color Me In, I remember enjoying this one!
Happy reading and have a beautiful month ❤

    1. Thank you, Marie!! 💕 Aah, I honestly was so surprised at how much I read last month, the month seemed to drag on forevveeerrr so that might be a part of it. I loved the concept of Color Me In but a lot of the writing and characterization threw me off in the end 😓 I felt like a bunch of the characters were very flat as well as some of the relationships (Nevaeh and Jesus’s in particular). I am really excited to see what Natasha Diaz writes next though since I know that this was her debut!

I hope you have a fantastic August!! ❤❤

  12. I hope you both are still celebrating your birthday month! I love my birthday and always try to eat my favorite foods and get to an exercise class for self care. I didn’t read any of the books you both read (except Dear Martin) yet, but You Should See Me in a Crown is one I hope to read this year (my order never arrived and I’m still sad about that). I bought Clap When You Land at the end of July and loved, loved it!

    1. Thank you!! Yesss to favorite foods!! Aah, I hope your order comes soon! You Should See Me in a Crown was such an enjoyable read! Yesss, Clap When You Land was fantastic, every single book that I read by Elizabeth Acevedo just gets me excited for her next one.

      I hope you’ve been having a great August! 💕
