I need to start my review by saying that I was initially interested in this book because of the cover. There was something about it that drew me in and made me read the synopsis and I’m so glad that I did!

In case you did not know, this book follows Luc, whose rock star father abandoned him when he was a toddler. Unfortunately this means that Luc is constantly in the press because he’s related to someone famous, and the papers have had quite a bit of fun questioning his life choices. In an effort to reform his image so that he won’t get fired, Luc ends up pretending to date Oliver, a pretentious lawyer that seems to be Luc’s complete opposite. And as is usual with fake dating, they might end up having feelings for one another that aren’t quite fake which they then must navigate!

If you looked at the cover and were immediately smacked in the face with its British look, that’s for a reason! This book is packed with delightful British humor (or should I say, humour)! I’ll talk about it a little more when I talk about the fantastic characters, but this book had me hooked from the beginning from the humor alone!

But in case you just thought this book was filled with laughs, think again! Because this is one of the most complexly written romances I’ve read! Both main characters, Luc and Oliver, are fleshed out, three dimensional characters with different interests, behaviors, and struggles. there is such growth from two of them, and I loved the support system that they became for one another, while never falling into a codependent relationship. The two had their disagreements and their differences in opinions, but they both eventually came to understand that they were great both on their own and as a unit.

A description of both of the main characters

I think one of the aspects I liked about this book the most was that the characters, especially Luc, allowed themselves to be vulnerable with one another. There were many times where Luc wasn’t quite ready to verbally discuss things, but that was okay because Oliver would give him a hug in order to show that he would be there for Luc whenever he was ready. That’s what made this romance stand out to me. The relationship progressed in such wonderful small, subtle ways, but also in such big ways, and the mixture of the two made their relationship feel very natural. (As a side note, their relationship reminded me a lot of David and Patrick’s relationship from Schitt’s Creek, so if you like that show, I’d recommend this book!)

The familial relationships in this book were complex, and not always great, but both Luc and Oliver had amazing friends, and in Luc’s case he also had a fantastic mother as well. But while were on the subject of side characters I love how each side character had a very distinct personality! Yes, they weren’t as fleshed out as the main characters, but that was exactly the point! Each one of them were designed in a way to make you laugh because of the hijinks they got up to or the things they said. There’s a completely oblivious colleague of Luc’s who was my absolute favorite, and I also adored his best friend who initially set up the couple!

Except Luc’s colleague is so oblivious he doesn’t even know he’s oblivious

There really was only one thing about this book that I didn’t like, and it has to do with the ending so I’ll be vague. What it sums up to is drama. I’ve mentioned close to one thousand times that I hate drama in books, and this book was no exception. As in many romances, some drama occurred near the end. I’ve grown accustomed to that, so I don’t know how much I would have minded, if not for the fact that it made the ending feel really abrupt. I would have loved another chapter (or 5), or even just an epilogue. There was something missing for me about the last 30% of the book, which made me really sad because of how much I adored reading the first 70%.

4 Stars!

I’d definitely recommend this book for the characters and humor alone! I think that my issue is a personal one, and that if you like angst and drama you’ll enjoy this one a bit more than I did. And while I know this is already getting recommended as a book similar to Red, White, & Royal Blue (which I totally get), this one is a lot less steamy, so if the steaminess of Red, White, & Royal Blue bothered you, but you loved everything else, definitely check this one out!

Have you read this book? Do you plan on reading it? What’s the funniest book you read this year? Are you also in love with this cover?

  1. I’m definitely looking forward to this one, and while I adore romance, I understand what you mean about the ending of romance novels. There’s always some sort of drama in the last 20-30% and while some books/authors handle it well, at other times, the ending is not as good as it could be. :/ Anyhow, I’m glad you enjoyed the rest of the novel, and I love the Patrick + David comparison! I haven’t finished Schitt’s Creek, because it disappeared from Hungarian Netflix (I’m SO ANGRY about that), but I loved David and Patrick’s relationship.

    1. Yay! I really hope you love it!

But, yes! So many romance novels let me down with their endings! But at least I loved everything else about this book, so all in all it was a really positive experience!

The Patrick and David relationship comparison cannot be more spot on! While I was writing this review I was trying to figure out the perfect way to describe their relationship, and then I spotted a Schitt’s Creek gif and it hit me! I haven’t finished Schitt’s Creek either, although I believe it’s still up on Netflix for me. I’d better hurry up and finish up though, just in case American Netflix decides to pull the same nasty trick on me that Hungarian Netflix played on you!

  2. the synopsis of this book definitely reminded me of Red, White & Royal Blue, so I’m happy that my hunch was correct! i’ll definitely be picking up this book some time because it seems like it’ll make me really happy! that’s so sad to hear about the drama though. i think this is why i don’t really pick up romance books anymore :”) there’s always some last-minute drama at the end, and usually the cause of the drama is irritating/it’s not resolved well :((

    1. This is definitely the perfect book to pick up when you need something to make you happy! It made me smile and laugh countless times!

Yeah, drama just isn’t my thing. I much prefer when the conflict doesn’t affect the relationship, but unfortunately 9/10 times it does. And when it’s something stupid that could easily get resolved, but is just dragged out for the heck of it, UGH!

But if you need good romances with minimal drama, I’m your girl! Don’t give up on the genre because of that! If I’ve managed despite my hatred of drama, I’m sure I could come up with some books you’d enjoy too!

  3. I agree with the ending! That party felt so out of nowhere even though it was one of the main agreements from the start. I get wanting to make Oliver more complex but ahh that could have been more peppered in instead of having a big plot twist. It was placed so late in the book it felt like a part of a different story or just drama for the sake of drama and not tackling the issue.

I feel like the road trip was an attempt to poke fun at the dramatic endings in romcoms and it was fun though. Also, I love parallels so standing at each other’s doors was cute!

    1. Yeah! Oliver’s parents being awful sorta came out of no place, and I didn’t love the direction the book took from there! I hate how that one event so successfully destroyed all the wonderful buildup that Luc and Oliver had throughout the entire beginning and middle of the book! Drama for the sake of drama is not my cup of tea, so I would have loved for there had been more time to work through Oliver’s relationship with his parents, since I don’t think that plot point was really resolved!

And the roadtrip was definitely fun! Anytime Luc’s friends were around, I definitely had a good time and them being in the background at the reconciliation definitely felt rom-com like! The parallel with them standing at each other’s door was definitely cute, but I really wish there had been a few more chapters where you just get to see the couple on more stable ground, just having a wonderful time as real boyfriends with no end date! Or I would have loved an epilogue! But the whole rushed and drama filled ending was honestly my only critique, since I really did enjoy this book!

  4. Ah yay so glad to have found someone who also loved this one! It’s SO much fun omg!! The humour is FANTASTIC! Also so agree with you on the ties to RW&RB, I just reread that one and was thinking the exact same. Obviously this also adult romance but it had such similar vibes, especially the cover hehe ❤ Love your review, mine should also be going up soon hopefully yikes, need to make that happen

    1. It was so good! I had such a fun time reading this book! The humor was so perfectly British and made me laugh and smile the entire time I was reading!

It’s super similar to RW&RB, and you’re totally right! Maybe the similar cover was what drew my attention to this book initially! It’s very possible that I made the comparison between the two books before I ever read the synopsis for Boyfriend Material, based on the similar covers alone! And once I had it connected to RW&RB, one of my favorite books of last year, I definitely had to pick this book up, no matter what it was about! But even after reading it, I still stand by the comparison!

Thank you so much! 💕 (And my review went up later than planned as well! You got this!)

    1. Oooh, you should definitely pick it up! It has all of those things and more!

I’m super sensitive to drama, and honestly despite the ending, I still think it’s worth picking up! And who knows, maybe it won’t end up bothering you at all! I can’t wait to hear what you think of it!

      Thank you! 💕
