We Have Moved Past the Need for Hogwarts Houses//Ft. Other Bookish Ways to Categorize Yourself

What with the most recent JK Rowling debacle there has been lots of debate over whether or not you can separate the artist from their art. I know that Harry Potter as a series means a lot to a lot of people which may be the reason why there is so much debate about it.

Personally, Harry Potter was never an end all be all for me, and I can go on with my life without using Hogwarts houses to define my personality. However, I once again do recognize that personality categories are fun and a lot of people like to use them, so here are a bunch of other bookish ways you can categorize yourself without supporting a TERF!

Okay, so I need to start by saying that I haven’t actually read this book yet, but I desperately wanted a way to work Avatar the Last Airbender into this post. So here!

I was also debating writing an ATLA bookish themed post/tag, but I’m not sure if there’s a ~market~ for that on the blogosphere, so lemme know.

If ya’ll don’t know, in the Avatar universe, there are four types of elemental benders, Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. I took this quiz and got that I’m an Earthbender! Also, this book sounds real cool for anyone who enjoyed Avatar, and since I haven’t actually read it yet, my promo pitch shall be one short sentence. Badass female characters, f/f relationship, and cool bending of elements!

In Children of Blood and Bone there are ten whole Maji clans! Much better than four measly houses if you ask me. I adored the worldbuilding in CoBaB, it was honestly one of the strongest parts of the book for me. Um, did someone say who’s your godly parent? For all my die hard Percy Jackson people why haven’t you taken this quiz to determine who your godly parent is, and why aren’t you letting it define every single second of your day? I got that I’m a hunter of Artemis. This hurt at first since the quiz was like, no you don’t get a godly parent, but if I’m being totally honest, I always wanted to be a hunter of Artemis when I had first read the books.

As you might surmise from the title, there are nine (well technically eight) glorious necromancy houses in Gideon the Ninth. I have a whole review where I rave about how much I love this book over here, but if you’re just looking for an explanation of the houses, you can go here! I will be honest and say that the houses confuse me just a lil’ so I haven’t actually determined what house I’d be a part of! Maaaybe the sixth since they like books.

First let me give a little disclaimer that I much prefer the Six of Crows duology to the Shadow and Bone trilogy (please don’t hurt me), but if we’re going to checking to see what Grisha order we belong to, we have to start with the OG. If you don’t already know, there are three Grisha orders, Etherealki, Corporalki, and Materialki. There are subclasses in all of the orders, and if you haven’t read the books and want to find out more about them, you can check them out here. And to find out what order you belong to, you can take a quiz here! I got that I’m an Etherealki, and if we’re talking subclasses, I’d like to think that I’d be a Squaller because who doesn’t want flying ships.

There are so many other books that have fun classification systems, but these are some that had quizzes to help you readily determine which class you belong to. I hope that these helped the people trashing their Hogwarts houses fill part of that hole, and even if you are still clinging on to that house, why not be classified by other bookish things too!
