We Have Moved Past the Need for Hogwarts Houses//Ft. Other Bookish Ways to Categorize Yourself

What with the most recent JK Rowling debacle there has been lots of debate over whether or not you can separate the artist from their art. I know that Harry Potter as a series means a lot to a lot of people which may be the reason why there is so much debate about it.

Personally, Harry Potter was never an end all be all for me, and I can go on with my life without using Hogwarts houses to define my personality. However, I once again do recognize that personality categories are fun and a lot of people like to use them, so here are a bunch of other bookish ways you can categorize yourself without supporting a TERF!

Okay, so I need to start by saying that I haven’t actually read this book yet, but I desperately wanted a way to work Avatar the Last Airbender into this post. So here!

I was also debating writing an ATLA bookish themed post/tag, but I’m not sure if there’s a ~market~ for that on the blogosphere, so lemme know.

If ya’ll don’t know, in the Avatar universe, there are four types of elemental benders, Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. I took this quiz and got that I’m an Earthbender! Also, this book sounds real cool for anyone who enjoyed Avatar, and since I haven’t actually read it yet, my promo pitch shall be one short sentence. Badass female characters, f/f relationship, and cool bending of elements!

In Children of Blood and Bone there are ten whole Maji clans! Much better than four measly houses if you ask me. I adored the worldbuilding in CoBaB, it was honestly one of the strongest parts of the book for me. Here’s a fun guide to all the Maji clans in Children of Blood and Bone, and here’s a quiz to find out which clan you belong to.

Um, did someone say who’s your godly parent? For all my die hard Percy Jackson people why haven’t you taken this quiz to determine who your godly parent is, and why aren’t you letting it define every single second of your day? I got that I’m a hunter of Artemis. This hurt at first since the quiz was like, no you don’t get a godly parent, but if I’m being totally honest, I always wanted to be a hunter of Artemis when I had first read the books.

As you might surmise from the title, there are nine (well technically eight) glorious necromancy houses in Gideon the Ninth. I have a whole review where I rave about how much I love this book over here, but if you’re just looking for an explanation of the houses, you can go here! I will be honest and say that the houses confuse me just a lil’ so I haven’t actually determined what house I’d be a part of! Maaaybe the sixth since they like books.

First let me give a little disclaimer that I much prefer the Six of Crows duology to the Shadow and Bone trilogy (please don’t hurt me), but if we’re going to checking to see what Grisha order we belong to, we have to start with the OG. If you don’t already know, there are three Grisha orders, Etherealki, Corporalki, and Materialki. There are subclasses in all of the orders, and if you haven’t read the books and want to find out more about them, you can check them out here. And to find out what order you belong to, you can take a quiz here! I got that I’m an Etherealki, and if we’re talking subclasses, I’d like to think that I’d be a Squaller because who doesn’t want flying ships.

There are so many other books that have fun classification systems, but these are some that had quizzes to help you readily determine which class you belong to. I hope that these helped the people trashing their Hogwarts houses fill part of that hole, and even if you are still clinging on to that house, why not be classified by other bookish things too!

What results did you get from the quizzes? What are some of your favorite bookish classification systems?

  1. I admit I don’t think I can ever quite put Harry Potter in my past. But I can put it enough in my past that I don’t need to define myself by my Hogwarts house (Slytherin, in came you’re wondering) but I tend to love doing personality quizzes for all series like Harry Potter. You know I did a His Dark Materials one for my daemon, and for many series after. I’m just a sucker for a personality quiz, cannot resist. But this is a great list of new ways for us bookish folks to define ourselves now JK Rowling has proven highly problematic and doesn’t deserve our support.

    1. Aah, I also love doing personality quizzes! The bookish ones are always so fun! And I completely understand not being able to put Harry Potter completely in the past, as its become such a large part of so many people’s lives. The way I see it as long as people aren’t directly supporting JK Rowling there’s no need to completely force people to erase the stories from their lives. There is a whole different discussion to be had about how much you can really separate an author from their work, but that’s another can of worms.

  2. What a great idea for a post!! I love HP, but I’ve never been a truly diehard fan like many people. And as of right now, I’m not throwing my HP books away or anything, but I’m sort of done with JK. She may yet come around, but I’ll just wait and see, (Unlike other people, I’m not absolutely HORRIFIED by her opinions—I think she’s wrongheaded and misinformed, but I can say from personal experience that lots of people start out that way and gradually realize they were wrong over time. I still have hope that she will eventually be one of them. Until then, I won’t support her future books.)

Anyway, I took the Lightning Thief quiz, and I am apparently also a hunter of Artemis, so I guess we’re together on that one! 🙂

    1. Aaah, yesss for the Hunter of Artemis!! I mean we can always hope that someone will see the error of their ways, but there’s something about how JK Rowling decided to double down and publish an entire essay trying to excuse herself that doesn’t really sit right with me. I think a very large issue is that she doesn’t seem to be able to see all the people she hurt. Hopefully, one day she might be able to see it and apologize.

    1. Poseidon is a great godly parent!! Also, I love the range of your results, in one you control water and in another fire 😄

  3. I remember seeing book classification things all the time in the past but they never really caught on with me because some of them were totally missing the point of the books they were from (I don’t really want to know which District of Panem I would belong to because they’re all awful 😬). I can see why Hogwarts houses have lasted so long because they’re so nostalgic for a lot of people, but even when the books came out they were a really outdated boarding school thing anyway.

(oh, and i got corporalnik for the grisha quiz :D)

    1. Hahaha, I’ve never taken a district quiz but that actually sounds horrible 😂 One of the most ridiculous bookish quizzes I remember were the Divergent ones. Since I felt that the point of the whole book was that people can’t really be put into such basic categories but then there were quizzes trying to do just that.

      Yesss, Corporalnik is so cool!

  4. You got a hunter of Artemis!!! That is amazing 🙂 I thought that my godly parent would be Athena, but I took the quiz (like 5 times) and I got Poseidon. Which is cool, because hey, I get to share a cabin with Percy and Tyson!!!
But I definitely agree that there are so many other ways to classify yourself in the bookish community, and I really appreciate this post!

    1. Ooh, Poseidon is an awesome godly parent! I mean controlling water and breathing underwater sounds fantastic. AND there’s the whole being siblings/sharing a cabin with Percy and Tyson. I also love the Poseidon cabin, since there’s the cool fountain thing that Tyson built in there too 😄

      1. Controlling water and breathing underwater would be so cool!!! The Poseidon cabin is really amazing, plus I bet Tyson would build a bunch of crazy stuff! We never really get a description of any other house in the PJO series though. I wonder what the other cabins look like. In HOO we do learn more about the Hephaestus cabin though 🙂

    1. Yesss, mission accomplished!! She is so cool! When the Hunters first appeared in the books I was like omg so cool, how do I join!? Especially since it was possible for mortals to join too, which meant even if I *didn’t* have a godly parent, I could get in!

  5. i love quizzes so much!!!!!!!!! will be taking these as SOON as i finish this post 😉 and i never finished the harry potter series (didn’t really interest me) so honestly i’m kinda happy about that? yet i never had that one childhood series which makes me a bit sad sometimes, but i’m reading pjo soon!! thank you for the links, i’m sure to look into them right now ❤ (also don’t worry, i prefer the soc trilogy too… though i haven’t read shadow and bone 😳)

    1. You were blessed with foresight to have given up on the Harry Potter series before the rest of us 😔 Yessss, PJO was the Harry Potter of my childhood, superior in all ways! And omg I’m so glad that I’m not the only one. I actually tried reading shadow and bone, and dnf’d it really early in, and then I read SoC and loved it so I forced myself to give shadow and bone another try (not worth it imo 🙈).

  6. YOU!!! you are a genius for putting up this post!!!! Thank you for collating this list and providing amazing quizzes to take!! It’s about time people forget the Hogwart Houses when these classification systems exist. Children of Blood and Bone has been on my TBR for so long and knowing that there are clans I could possibly be sorted to is exciting!! This has automatically moved up to my priority tbr. An oof. I haven’t encountered an existing human being that prefers Shadow and Bone trilogy over SoC duology, so you’re not the only one!!🥰

    1. Aaah, I’m so happy you liked this post!! 💕💕 I hope you enjoy Children of Blood and Bone, the worldbuilding is just * chefs kiss * fantastic! I’m so glad that people have been agreeing with me about Six of Crows superiority over Shadow and Bone because I’ve seen so many die-hard Shadow and Bone fans on Twitter that honestly make me scared 😅

  7. Okay, but this post is everything. 😀 I love Percy Jackson – and I actually read it a lot more recently than I did Harry Potter – and yet I never did that quiz!? Even though having a godly parent is way cooler than having a Hogwarts house!? (I’ve just did the quiz and I got Hades, so I’m PLEASED. :D)

    1. A child of the big three!! That is *very* cool. You also get to claim Nico and Hazel as siblings now, which makes it even cooler! Um yes, I completely agree that a godly parent is better than a Hogwarts house. For some odd reason Harry Potter has outshone Percy Jackson in terms of popularity for years, but that soon shall end with the release of the Disney+ show! (whenever that may be).

    1. Thank you!! 💕💕 Marie, you MUST read Percy Jackson! I’m scared that you won’t like it as much since you’ll be reading it for your first time as an adult, but it’s a risk I’m willing to take 😄

    1. Yayy! I’m so happy you enjoyed it! Aah, I love how you got Firebender AND Burner clan. And then Poseidon and Etherealnik also kind of match!

  8. This is an amazing post! I need to read Children of Blood and Bone, it’s been awhile since I’ve read anything from Grishaverse (I only read the first book and a bit and haven’t gotten around to finishing it since then) but I think I’m an inferni 🙂

      1. Hahah, I tried responding to your comments in two diff ones and now it looks funny so ignore that please 🙈 BUT. YAY! I’m so happy that you’re on board, and now I will definitely start brainstorming for a tag!!

    1. Thank you!! 💕 Ok, my advice is that you should completely skip the Shadow and Bone trilogy, and just read Six of Crows! It’s much much better imo, and I wasn’t able to finish Shadow and Bone the first time I read it either 😅

  9. aaaaa this is such a fun idea, chana, i love it

turns out im also an earthbender (emotionally tho i always chose the air option in any element question so let’s secretly believe i’m an airbender, thnx)

i’m also the daughter of hades. the past-time question on the quiz was extremely funny tho, like look at me casually practicing my archery on a casual sunday afternoon (hmm i WONDER which god i’ll get if i chose that option 👀) gotta appreciate the subtleness

    1. Thank you!! 💕 Yess, Earthbender buddies! Though if you vibe more with the Airbenders, maybe you’re actually the Avatar!

I *love* super obvious quiz options! They make me laugh because honestly, yes, the subtlety knows no bounds, AND I love choosing random ones and seeing if that’s the actual question that decides the quiz 😂

  10. I absolutely love the concept present in ATLA and ever since I was a child I thought of myself as a water bender, haha. (Maybe because people kept telling me that I look like Katara XD). This is such a creative and fun blog post! ❤ I enjoyed it very much. 🙂

    1. ATLA is so good!! And waterbending is super cool as well! I always think of blood bending though, which is a little bit creepy, but also really awesome. Thank you! I’m so happy you enjoyed it! 💕

  11. i love this so much! we definitely have moved past the need for hogwarts houses (or anything harry potter lmao). i am 100% classifying myself according to the atla elements, as i’ve been super obsessed with atla for the past few months! i was actually wondering if there was an atla book tag, so if you made one, i would ABSOLUTELY do it ❤

but yes using pjo gods/cabins is a great idea too! especially since it has the same kind of childhood nostalgia attached to hp, but the author is an actually good ally. i need to read gideon the ninth still, but i have the rise of the kyoshi checked out from my library right now and i'm so excited to read it!!

    1. Thank you!! I mean at this point even if JKR wasn’t a huge TERF, Hogwarts Houses are just so *tired*, like let’s spice things up a bit. Exactly! When I was writing this I was super confused as to why I had never taken a godly parent quiz, because that was a waaay bigger part of my childhood than Harry Potter.

Aah! My hold for Rise of Kiyoshi literally JUST came through an hour ago and I can’t wait to read it!! I am 100% ready for an angry tall bisexual queen 😄
