Book Addiction Tag

We found this wonderful tag over at Howling Libraries, and just had to try it out! It’s no surprise to anyone that we’re “addicted” to books, but for details on just how addicted, you’ll have to read to find out.

1) What is the longest amount of time you can comfortably go without picking up a book?

Chana: This is a hard question. Because some days go by and I have to read a book in any free time I have. But sometimes, I’ll have a reading slump and not read anything for over a week.

Malka: If I’m busy or slumpy I can actually go a while. I, unfortunately, discovered this during The Year of the Slump in 2018. But in most cases, tops 2-3 days.

2) How many books do you carry on your person (or kindle) at any one time?

Chana: I never carry any physical books on me because ooof heavy. But I do always have somewhere between 3-9 e-books available for reading, courtesy of my libraries digital library.

Malka: If I’m traveling I usually take 3-7 books in my luggage because I’m ridiculous. But in my daily life, I have a few unread books on my Kindle, most of them e-arcs, that I can read through if I have the time. But even then I have less than 10 unread books on my Kindle.

3) Do you keep every book you buy/receive or are you happy to pass them on to make space for more?

Chana: I may have mentioned this before, but I’m a total hoarder. So I don’t usually let many books go, but since I’ve started receiving ARCs I’m more open to letting some go to people who might appreciate them more.

Malka: I keep about 85% of the books I buy and/or receive, but recently I’ve gotten better at letting go of the meh books. I usually have no problem getting rid of the ones I’ve hated or put down on page one.

4) How long would you spend in a bookshop on a standard visit?

Chana: I could spend hours in a bookstore. I have spent hours in a bookstore. But I’ve also gone to Barnes and Noble 5 minutes before closing to just dash in and grab a book.

Malka: Honestly, I usually turn going to the bookshop into a whole day event. I sit and read and stare at all the pretty books and find so many shiny new ones to read. I only cut it shorter than that if I must.

5) How much time per day do you actually spend reading?

Chana: At least two and half hours a day since I always try to read on my commute.

Malka: Depends on the day. Some days it’s only a page or two, some days half a book. The half a book occasions are usually over the weekend.

6) Where does the task ‘picking up a book’ appear on your daily to-do list?

Chana: It’s always in the back of my mind, though I like to keep up an illusion of me trying to do work, so it’s never explicitly on my to-do list.

Malka: It doesn’t need to go on the list. I read whenever I’m in the mood. If I’m in the mood to read before doing things with deadlines then I read. If I choose to do work instead of reading, I may not read today. I’m a mood reader. LISTS CAN’T CONTROL ME.

7) How many books do you reckon you own in total (including e-books)?

Chana: I have absolutely no idea. I’ve never counted, and I used to have a different kindle when I was younger, so I have no idea how many books are on there that I’ve forgotten about.

Malka: I COUNTED THIS RECENTLY. But without e-books. And I’ve acquired some new books since then, so this number is approximate but I’m going to go with 400. About 330 physical and exactly 67 e-books. I’m only off by 10-15 or so, probably. This number is pretty accurate.

8) Approximately how often do you bring up books in conversation?

Chana: Too often.

Malka: All the time. It’s the only way I know how to make friends.

9) What is the biggest book (page count) you have finished reading?

Chana: I think it would be 994 pages from Patrick Rothfuss’s The Wise Man’s Fear.

Malka: Samesies. And I checked. Not even reading Kingdom of Ash will help me beat that number. But reading more Brandon Sanderson might. 

10) Is there a book you had to get your hands on against all odds (i.e searching bookshops, online digging, etc.)?

Chana: I REALLY wanted an ARC of Archenemies, though I mostly pouted about not having it. It was pure luck that I managed to get it at Comic Con.

Malka: YES! My UK special edition of Fangirl which my friend was so awesome in helping me find! She honestly has helped me get at least 3 out of 8 of my copies.

* EDIT * It has come to my attention that 3 out of 8 was a very low guess. In fact, the real number is 5 out of 8. Including both my first copy and my most recent copy.

11) A book you struggled to finish but refused to DNF?

Chana: Just last month I read One Man Guy, and I had to force myself to finish it. I was not a fan of any of the characters, and I also didn’t find the plot very engaging.

Malka: I’m pretty good about DNFing but I remember hating every minute of Breathe by Abbi Glines. I probably would have DNFed it if I had read it in recent years. (She says as if 2014 was 3 decades ago).

12) What are 3 of your main book goals for 2019?

Chana: I mentioned this in our goals for 2019 post, but I really want to write more reviews. That goal hasn’t been going well so far though. I also would like to read 200 books this year, and read a bigger variety of genres.

Malka: I just want to read. Honestly. But I’d also like to finish reading my BookCon books. And finish up a series or two. (Looking at you Throne of Glass.)

13) Have you ever had the privilege of converting someone into a reader (maybe via inspiration or incessant nagging)?

Chana: I’m pretty sure that I converted 2 of my siblings into readers (I’m still working on the last two).

Malka: Hmmmm. Not really? I mostly talk to people who already are readers. I have convinced people to read specific books though!

14) Describe what books mean to you in five words.

Chana: They are my only hobby.

Malka: Reading helps keep me sane.
